Christantus Uche Ignites Dominant Crystal Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their first-ever continental campaign, Crystal Palace are adapting very quickly. Without key figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a commanding win that virtually guarantees them a spot in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further victory in their next fixture against Finnish KuPS should be enough to seal direct entry to the knockout stages, particularly after a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Opportunity
This occasion provided a chance for some of Palace's fringe talent to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after joining on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a well-taken goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, scoring for the second game in succession.
A Shelbourne side that had finished their league season proved outmatched even for a largely second-string Palace outfit. The Londoners were already depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg problems.
Control Established from the Start
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A flowing move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close minutes later, fizzing a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the referee waved away the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal striker didn't need to wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had struck the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for two agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The contest was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of comically weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring his very first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then blazed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still room for development in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, capping an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
